House Tour: Wallpaper, Lighting, and Floors

I know a lot of you who follow me on Snapchat and YouTube have been waiting for another house update, (really we’re all just waiting for it to be done!) so I figured I’d show you a peek at how it’s all coming together since we’re so close to the finish line. I also want to share some of the challenges I’m facing when it comes to finishes… Maybe you can weigh in and help me decide what to do?!

Let’s start with the floors: If you’ve seen my house update videos you know I was always set on getting traditional narrow plank floors; the kind that’s really common in houses built before the 20’s. Unfortunately, these were hard to find as most of what’s sold now is a more modern wide plank style. I was finally able to find a close match through a company called Armstrong, and I had the vision of doing a herringbone pattern just in the entry.

What I didn’t know was that usually a herringbone style is done with unfinished wood and then finished all together when the pattern has been laid. But since I have an excellent woodworker doing my floors, (as well as my kitchen and custom built in bookcase in my study) he was able to carve notches in the appropriate places in order to lay the wood in a herringbone pattern. It came together seamlessly and I couldn’t be more excited! When I took this photo they were still working on finishing the last 20 square feet by the door so I’m showing you the part that’s been completed.

We’re also done with the room that I’m calling the Pineapple Palace, which will be my guest bedroom. Pineapples represent hospitality so this Barneby Gates wallpaper could not be more perfect for this room. And for the bathroom I kept the dark vibes going with a medieval style floor tile, a black clawfoot tub, and 6×6 white subway tile with dark grout to give it a slightly country feel. I’m so happy with how this turned out!

My contractor and his team also installed the original pendant light back in the stairway and this really caught me off guard when I saw it. It made me emotional! There were so few elements of the original house that I was able to keep— this pendant light, the sconces outside the front door, a set of lights in one of the bathrooms, and the ceiling and molding in the formal living room— I think seeing it just made me remember the house the way it was when I bought it. It is an absolutely stunning piece and casts a beautiful light against the walls at night.

Speaking of originals, there was a set of lights in one of the bathrooms when I bought the home that I knew I had to save and reinstall. This actually might be the most beautiful light fixture I’ve ever seen; it’s so unique and most importantly it’s original to the home. I didn’t photograph the floor but I’ve got a white arabesque tile on the floor, and you can see the black and white mini hex tile in the shower in a black and white variation. This bathroom turned out to have a whimsical style that was 100% accidental. I had all the other bathrooms figured out, but this one I just sort of flew by the seat of my pants. Needless to say it was a happy accident because I love how it turned out! (The mirror hasn’t been installed just yet, by the way!)

Another bathroom that’s missing a mirror is the guest bathroom downstairs. I don’t know why, but I’ve been having a really hard time finding mirrors for this house! (In fact, I DIY’d my way through the enormous mirror in the master bathroom.) But the black paneling, the white console with brass legs, and the stunning Ellie Cashman wallpaper make this bathroom one of my favorites I’ve seen. I’m so glad it turned out this way because this is the bathroom my guests will be using. For the mirror, I’m looking for something tall and oval, and one with a black or brass frame.

My big dilemma now is in the kitchen: Between pendants and sconces, I needed a lot of light fixtures in the kitchen. I asked my contractor not to install recessed lighting in there, so I’ve got a total of 8 lights instead. It was hard to visualize what was going to look good, so I ordered whatever sconces and pendant lights I thought would work. It was a shot in the dark! My electrician installed everything and I took one look at it and knew something was wrong. It just doesn’t look right. I came to the conclusion that the globes are too large for the space; it feels cramped when I look at them.

And then there’s the lantern pendants: They’re gorgeous, but do I want them in black iron instead?? It just looks like too much gold altogether to me, but then again the appliances haven’t been put in yet. This is my biggest challenge right now so I’m just searching for other options and considering swapping out the Darlana lantern for the black iron. What do you think? Let me know in the comments what you would do, because at this point, I’m stuck!

Ahh Teni I love seeing house updates! I would keep the gold lantern pendants–they are gorgeous! But I would do black, (maybe even charcoal gray), square-ish shaped lights above the sink, because the gold globes compete with the faucet a little bit, I think. 🙂 It’s all coming together amazing! Love it

I agree, keep them but in black. ☺

Love love love house updates! As for which color I love the gold pendants they give the kitchen that little extra umph. For the globes maybe you can still use the globe fixtures but maybe position them coming down from the ceiling just like the pendants. Overall love how the house is coming along Teni it looks amazing!

I have to agree with you on the pendants in the kitchen…get black iron instead. And fornreplacing the globes, i think after u get the black laterns, they might actually go better. Just a thought! Good luck!

Hi teni! Love these updates. In my opini, you should definitely keep the gold pendants. I know you’re a all black everything kinda girl (so am I) but they’re gorgeous! And who has gold pendents in their kitchen?! So it’s original too! You can swap out the globes into a more square shape if you want, but I kinda like them too.

Haha maybe you should make a twitter pool on the pendants but my preference is definitely gold ⚜️

Btw: i live for these house updates

I see what you’re talking about with the globe lights…wondering also if the window panes being taped up is making that area look busy…perhaps removing that before you decide what to swap out might help you visualize it a little clearer…? And although I agree with 8 light fixtures there is a fair amount of gold going on, I do kind of think those gold pendant lights are the star of the show out of the 8 fixtures (so unique and stunning in gold), would be kind of a shame to replace them. BUT also know from experience that if something bothers your eye, CHANGE it because I think you’re a lot like me and it’ll be the only thing you see when you walk into that room until you like it lol. 😉 Keep up the good work…you’re almost there! #RenovationSista 😉

Its gorgeous <3 I think black for the lantern pendants is awesome, I would try it and see… maybe a softer black so its not harsh to the eye like a matte finish?

I can see why you don't like the globes… you have a fantastic eye for design, excited to see the finished product. Your herringbone touches are so dreamy!!!

It looks beautiful! Great job! Where did you get the lighting fixtures for the kitchen?

Heidi 06/26/2017 at 1:42 am

Definitely change them to black or just natural dark iron. Changing up the metals makes so much of a difference. Love your choices so far.

I love the Lanterns in the gold. I would keep them since its at the center of the kitchen. It will make them a nice focal point. I would tone down the other lights though. No globes just something smaller and simple. Don’t do gold I would choose something that kind of blends in, but gives off a nice light. I think once your appliances go on you will feel different and like the lanterns in the gold. If you can; wait until your appliances go in then decide. Sometimes seeing it more finished will trigger a “omg I def need this now that I can see it.” I’m building a house too; so I feel you on trying to envision things that are not there, or making your vision come to life. Your doing an AMAZING Job!!! XOXO Lana Alicia

Love everything so far! Will you be my designer for my house, pleeeease!! For the lights in the kitchen I agree with you on the globes. They’re either to big or it’s the shape competing with the lanterns in the center. I say keep the gold lanterns and change the globes to a different shape and color. Kinda like contouring the face….contour the kitchen’s forehead. LOL!! Or go black for both sets of lights.

Question about your bathroom vanities. Did you purchase a all in one integrated vanities or did you do cabinetry and counters separately? Where did you purchase your bathroom vanities? I’m redoing two bathrooms and can’t figure out what would be more cost effective and better quality; furniture style vanity or build out cabinets and select counter tops.

Can’t wait to see more of your house!!! #snapchatfam LOOOOOOVE the new blog/site!

Cannot wait to see the full house tour im loving everything!
I would go for black iron for the pendant lights, it would definitely go with the rest of the kitchen!! Also I would get rid of the globes altogether, even if you get smaller ones I’m not sure they would go either!

It is coming out so good!!! I love you interior styling. I would change the pendants to black; maybe you can sand the down and repaint them yourself? A great change for the gobbles might be long rectangle scones in gold hardware. The guest bathroom is my favorite!!! the black against the white sink with metal hardware looks so gorgeous, you nailed it!!!

teni 07/01/2017 at 4:34 am

Actually that’s exactly what I’m going to do! Once you install I believe you can’t exchange so we’re just going to paint it ourselves. 🙂

Faith Thomas 06/26/2017 at 6:27 pm

It’s beautiful so far Teni! I know we are almost as anxious as you to see the final result. Have you picked your kitchen knobs yet? I love the idea of an oval mirror for that bathroom. I personally love the gold lantern pendants, especially if your appliances wind up being black and I agree that the lights above the sink are too big but they look gorgeous with that faucet.

Faith Thomas 06/26/2017 at 6:28 pm

Also who knew that’s what pineapples stood for? Good to know!
